Author Spotlight George MacDonald (1824-1905)
Serious fantasy readers who know their classics are well acquainted with George MacDonald, regarded by many as one of the fathers of modern Fantasy literature. His book Phantastes graces the must-read lists of the imaginative arts' experts, and he is credited with inspiring fantasy and science fiction masters including J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Madeleine L'Engle and Lewis Carroll.

As a fan of MacDonald's, I've wondered if the rising popularity of Tolkien and Lewis generated by the recent blockbuster movies based on their works, might soon draw popular attention to bear on this sometimes forgotten literary hero. My hunch is, that it will, and in anticipation I thought a spotlight on MacDonald might be fitting preparation. Perhaps you'll stretch your fingers to the corners of your bookshelf to pull out your favorite, or maybe discover a new MacDonald treasure in the partial bibliography (fiction only) below.
